M-Cor Inc ‘s Teflon® Encapsulated O-Ring Construction

for Sealing Engineers

M-Cor’s Teflon® encapsulated O-ring,  also known as a FEP/PFA encapsulated O-ring, is a seal designed to combine the resilience and compression set resistance of an elastomer combined with the chemical resistance of Teflon, known by its generic name, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), or its other copolymers like fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) or perfluoroalkoxy (PFA).

The construction of M-Cor’s Teflon® encapsulated O-ring may follow these steps:

1. Elastomeric Core Selection: The process begins by choosing an elastomer core that is usually made of a material of silicone, FKM Viton or EPDM. See How to Specify

2. Teflon® Encapsulation Selection: The elastomer is then encapsulated in Teflon® FEP or PFA. (see how to specify)This is typically done using one of the following methods:

– Extrusion: Teflon® is extruded into a tube that is then cut to the correct length and sealed around the elastomer core  to make a seamless and leak free encapsulation which completely encloses the elastomer core.

– Molding For certain applications the Teflon® material is molded directly around the elastomer core, creating a seamless encapsulation in a single step. This method can produce a very durable encapsulation.

3. Curing : During this process the Teflon® encapsulated  o-ring is cured at elevated temperatures.

4. Finishing : After curing, the encapsulated o-ring may be subjected to finishing processes to ensure that the encapsulation is smooth and free of any burrs or protrusions that might affect sealing performance.

5. Inspection and Testing: Once the encapsulation process is complete, the Teflon® encapsulated O-rings are individually inspected for any defects and may be tested to ensure that they meet the required customer specifications.

M-Cor Inc. Teflon® Encapsulated O-rings are commonly used in applications where standard O-rings would degrade, such as applications with aggressive chemicals, extreme temperatures, or where purity is critical (like in the chemical processing, food, pharmaceutical and semiconductor industries).
