Solid-Core and Hollow-Core Designs

Teflon® encapsulated O-rings are supplied with either solid or hollow-core energizers. Specifically, solid-core energizers provide the best resistance to compression set and recovery. In contrast, hollow-core (tubing) O-rings, containing a circular gap within the energizer, offer effective sealing for situations requiring a more flexible, easier-to-squeeze O-ring. Lock Out Corrosive Fluids and Gases: Teflon® Encapsulated Silicone and Viton® O-Rings

M-Cor’s PTFE encapsulated O-rings feature a core made of silicone, Viton, or EPDM elastomers, all encased in a uniform Teflon sheath. Therefore, this combination allows the O-rings to maintain their shape under pressure and offer chemical resistance against a variety of acids, bases, and solvents. Furthermore, these O-rings have low friction, non-stick surfaces, minimal gas release, and very low water absorption. In addition, they provide excellent electrical insulation properties and durability, operating effectively over a wide temperature range. Therefore, they are essential in applications requiring protection against corrosive substances. These O-rings are also referred to as FEP encapsulated O-rings, PFA encapsulated O-rings, Silicone encapsulated O-rings, and Viton® encapsulated O-rings. Encapsulated O-rings feature a seamless Teflon® jacket surrounding a rubber core, available in Silicone, Viton®, and EPDM. This design provides chemical inertness and resistance to compression set, making them ideal for harsh sealing environments. We stock Teflon® encapsulated O-rings in cross sections from .060 to .750 inches, covering all AS568 sizes from AS009, preferred metric sizes, and JIS, with larger custom sizes available upon request. Installation Guidelines

The FEP/PFA encapsulation is a hard material with limited flexibility compared to the fully elastomeric O-ring inside. Accordingly, for difficult installations to avoid damage heat the Teflon® encapsulated O-rings prior to installation and ensure installation surfaces are free from sharp edges.,

Heating Methods:

  • Hot Water (Recommended): Heat water to 100°C / 212°F, place Teflon® encapsulated O-rings in water for a minimum of 3 minutes, and install them while still warm.
  • Oven Heating: Set oven to 100°C / 212°F, heat Teflon® encapsulated O-rings for a minimum of 15 minutes, and install them immediately after removing from the oven.
